Electrical grid characterisation as a PLC channel
Service overview
Using the existing electrical grid infrastructures as a communication channel for smart city / country projects is for sure a real opportunity for a fast and affordable deployment.
But how to be sure that the grid will support powerline communication?
TRIALOG, a worldwide leading company for Power Line Communication (PLC) is now able to provide you an innovative solution to highlight where and how much the grid may support PLC to know exactly where you go.
Detailed work
Based on a three decades experience on PLC researches, TRIALOG has engineered and released a powerful field tool allowing to automatically evaluate the ability of an electrical grid to support PLC.
This tool performs fundamental electrical measurements such as complex access impedance, noise spectrogram and channel transfer function between two points of the electrical grid up to 3 phases simultaneously.
Ici et Maintenant
The “Ici et Maintenant” application (I & M) offers the possibility for a registered “Broadcaster” to send information to “users”.
The Users use a mobile application to read messages and make comments.
By construction the users are present in the territory where the application is deployed. Information providers (broadcasters) are registered, validated and follow an editorial charter that they have signed.
Messages are sorted by category, but they can also be sorted by broadcaster. Below are some examples of categories:
- Events / Outings
- Administrative Information
- Commercial information
- Hobbies
- Health / Prevention
- Everyday life
EV ComboCS, the CCS tester (DIN 70121 and ISO 15118)
The ComboCS tool is dedicated to the communication layer validation: IEC 61851-1, PLC low layers (ISO 15118-3 / DIN 70121), and applicative layers (ISO 15118-2 / DIN 70121). Tests are done without any power transfer, but an add-on can be added to test the charging station behaviour in real conditions.
To debug, test and validate an ISO 15118 or DIN 70121 implementation, the ComboCS tool is offering several modes:
- Expert mode: Complete control over the messages sent by the EV to the EVSE
- Conformance tests: According to ISO 15118-4
- Interoperability tests: Simulation of existing EV behaviours
- Sniffer Option: PLC traffic analysis between the EV and the EVSE
EVSE ComboCS, the CCS tester (DIN 70121 and ISO 15118)
The ComboCS tool is dedicated to the communication layer validation: IEC 61851-1, PLC low layers (ISO 15118-3 / DIN 70121), and applicative layers (ISO 15118-2 / DIN 70121). Tests are done without any power transfer, but an add-on can be added to test the electric vehicle’s behaviour in real conditions.
To debug, test and validate an ISO 15118 or DIN 70121 implementation, the ComboCS tool is offering several modes:

EV ComboCS4M, the CCS simulator (DIN 70121 and ISO 15118)
Lighter than the EV ComboCS, the ComboCS4M is focusing on simulating charging sessions to verify if a charging station or a SECC reacts correctly and according to the standards. It offers a simple and robust solution for all setups involving CCS vehicle, such as end of line testing of a charging station, or for installation or maintenance operations.
EVSE ComboCS4M, the CCS simulator (DIN 70121 and ISO 15118)
Lighter than the EVSE ComboCS, the ComboCS4M is focusing on simulating charging sessions to verify if a vehicle or EVCC reacts correctly and according to the standards. It offers a simple and robust solution for all setups involving CCS charging stations such as end of line testing of a vehicle or an OBC.
YaCCS SECC, the CCS communication stack (DIN 70121 and ISO 15118)
To accelerate the implementation of CCS technology in charging stations, TRIALOG has developed an industrial communication stack named YaCCS SECC for PLC ISO 15118-3, ISO 15118-2 and DIN 70121 standards. It also supports the newly released ISO 15118-20 that enables V2G. Integrated into a charging station, this C++ development stack provides all the communication means for AC and DC CCS charges.
YaCCS is validated thanks to TRIALOG’s experience and expertise, including the ComboCS test tool. Additionally, it has been tested with success during the 2019 and 2021 CharIN Testival. YaCCS is currently under deployment in several AC and DC chargers around the world.
YaCHA SECC, the CHAdeMO communication stack
To accelerate the implementation of CHAdeMO technology in charging stations, TRIALOG has developed an industrial communication stack named YaCHA SECC for CHAdeMO v0.9 to 2.0. Integrated into a charging station, this C++/Qt development stack provides all the communication means for CHAdeMO DC charges, and even CHAdeMO DC V2G & V2H.
YaCHA is validated thanks to TRIALOG’s experience and expertise. Additionally, it has been tested with success with different vehicles of the market. YaCHA is currently under deployment in several EVSE DC chargers around the world.
QOCPP CS, the OCPP communication stack for charging stations
To monitor, control and facilitate maintenance of AC and DC charging stations, to promote the adoption of Smart Charging and Plug&Charge solutions, TRIALOG has developed an industrial communication stack named QOCPP CS. This stack supports OCPP WebSocket/JSON 1.6 and 2.0 (the newest version supported is OCPP 2.0.1). Integrated into an AC or DC charging station, this C++/Qt development stack provides all the means to establish an OCPP communication with a CSMS.
QOCPP CS is validated thanks to TRIALOG’s experience and expertise, including its internal test tools. Additionally, it has been tested with several CSMS implementations during many OCPP Plugfests and has been selected by the Open Charge Alliance (OCA) to be the reference implementation to test their OCPP 2.0.1 certification tool. QOCPP CS is currently deployed in charging stations prototypes, and under deployment into several EVSE AC and DC industrial charger models around the world.
